Twenty two new Public Roads declared in Georgetown - What does this mean for Buisnesses?
Twenty two Ministerial Orders declaring new public roads were gazetted 21 March 2026. Orders 15 through 37 of 2026 signed by the Minister of Public Works made Cowan Street, New Market Street, Middle Street, Aubrey Barker Road, Vlissingen Road, Cane View Avenue, Garnett Street, D’andrade Street, Da Silva Street, Lamaha Street, Dennis Street, Eastern Highway, Sandy Babb Street, Albert Street, Cummings Street, Regent Street, Robb Street, Charlotte Street, America Street, Camp Street, East Street and Hadfield Street Public Roads. Effectively wresting these streets and their parapets from Municipal control to Government of Guyana control with the stroke of a pen.
It must have crossed your mind by now – as a someone involved in business in Guyana, how does this affect me?
It matters if you advertise and would like to place billboards on road parapets. It also matters for any person or business seeking to use the parapets, such as trading permission for roadside festivals, like Mashramani or Guyana Carnival, Easter etc. For any permission would now have to be sought from the Ministry of Public Works rather than the Municipality of Georgetown.
Also, the more public roads under the auspices of the Government of Guyana will proportionately increase the number of public contracts for repair and/or rehabilitation of those public roads.
